Bhutan, the small Buddhist kingdom at the eastern end of the Himalayan range, is bordered to the north by China and to the south, east and west by India. Further west, it is separated from Nepal by the Indian state of Sikkim, while further south it is separated from Bangladesh by the Indian states of Assam and West Bengal.
Bhutan’s capital and largest city is Thimphu.
It is known for its monasteries, fortresses, also called dzongs, and impressive landscapes that include everything from subtropical plains to steep mountains and deep valleys. In the Himalayas, peaks such as the 7,326m-high Jomolhari are popular trekking destinations.
The epithet of the “Happiest Country in the World,” has also helped the kingdom catapult its fame among travelers.
