Get ready for an extraordinary adventure in the wild landscapes of Patagonia! This epic journey will take you through glaciers and the mythical Torres del Paine.
We will visit places of great beauty with views of Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre, two of the most iconic mountains in Patagonia. We will also visit the Perito Moreno Glacier and Torres del Paine National Park.
On this trip, we will uncover some of the secrets of Patagonia as we experience it up close through hikes accompanied by a local guide and the tour leader from Papa-Léguas, Ricardo Nogueira.
The hikes are of moderate difficulty, as they do not involve technical skills, and in theory, anyone who is accustomed to walking and enjoys camping and pure nature can participate. Lastly, as an optional extension, we can spend two nights and a full day exploring the beautiful Buenos Aires.
International flight to Punta Arenas (Chile), with intermediate stopovers. Night on board.
Note: the arrival/departure dates may vary, depending on your origin city. If you have any doubts, contact Papa-Léguas for further clarification.
Arrival in Punta Arenas, assistance at the airport, located 20 km from the city of Punta Arenas, and transfer to the hotel, situated in the city center of Punta Arenas.
Arrival and check-in from 14:00 (time subject to confirmation).
Dinner is not included but will be a group meal for group introduction and a briefing by the leader, Ricardo Nogueira.
Today we will visit one of the southernmost cities on the planet. Punta Arenas is the starting point for Chilean Patagonia, with its highlight being the Torres del Paine National Park, or for Antarctica.
After breakfast at the hotel, we will be transferred to the dock in Punta Arenas, located on the shores of the legendary Strait of Magellan, where we will board a boat to visit the penguin colony on Magdalena Island, one of the largest Magellanic penguin colonies in Chile, home to over 60,000 pairs of these graceful birds.
Once on the island, we will be able to walk among hundreds of penguins for about 1 hour. The total duration of this activity is approximately 5 hours.
The execution of this visit is subject to weather conditions.
After returning to Punta Arenas, we will explore the city. Depending on time availability, we may visit places such as the craft market located on 21 de Mayo Street, which also hosts the local market, especially for seafood lovers. We may also visit the "Nau Victoria" Museum, which features a life-size replica of Ferdinand Magellan's ship.
We will also get to know the "Plaza de Armas de Punta Arenas" and its historic center, characterized by palaces such as the Sara Braun Palace, built by a Russian woman who married the Portuguese José Nogueira.
Today, we will wake up early, have breakfast, check out, and be transferred to the bus station for an express bus ride to Puerto Natales, another charming Chilean city located approximately 250 km (155 miles) away.
Puerto Natales is a lovely coastal city with a well-preserved Plaza de Armas, a waterfront promenade facing the "Ultima Esperanza" Fjord, known as the "Orla de Puerto Natales," and numerous restaurants offering excellent food.
Upon arrival in Puerto Natales, we will transfer to the hotel and take a stroll through the city.
Today we will wake up early, but it will definitely be worth it as we will visit one of the wonders of Chilean Patagonia, Torres del Paine National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The park is also rich in fauna and flora, and it’s common to spot guanacos, rheas, condors, and various species of birds of prey. One of the highlights of the park is its richness in flower species.
We will depart in a private vehicle to the national park, and as we get closer, we will begin to see some of the park's most iconic mountains, such as Paine Grande, the Horns, Admiral Nieto, and the Towers.
Arrival at the start of the Ascensio Valley trekking.
We will begin today’s hike early, one of the most spectacular trails in the national park, the "Torres del Paine Trail."
Crossing the bridge over the Ascensio River, we will follow the path toward the iconic Torres del Paine. We will do a warm-up on the first ascent to enter the valley, a valley with alpine characteristics that takes us into the Paine massif.
We will pass by the Chileno Refuge, a cozy and comfortable mountain lodge. Continuing on the trail, we will gradually ascend through a forest of beech trees, and then reach a moraine region, which will lead us to the viewpoint of the Torres del Paine, where we can enjoy a stunning landscape with the three Towers in the background and the lake at their base.
The Towers are about a thousand meters high from the base of the glacier and are truly impressive.
We will then head to the Pudeto dock to board a catamaran that will cross Lake Pehoe.
After arriving on the opposite shore, we will settle in the Paine Grande camp.
Overnight in tents.
Today's Trekking: Distance: approximately 20 km (12.4 miles) / Duration: 7-8 hours.
After breakfast, we will set off with a daypack, heading toward the French Valley via the "French Valley Trail."
The trail ascends through the southern slope of Paine Grande, passing by Skottberg Lake, and continues to the suspension bridge over the French Valley. In this spectacular spot, we will be at the base of the southeastern face of Paine Grande (2700m) and the "Horns," which are characterized by black sedimentary rock.
We will continue the trek for about 1 hour to the "Italian Camp," where we will enjoy magnificent views of the region.
After lunch, we will return to the "Paine Grande" base camp.
Today's Trekking: Distance: 17 km (11 miles) / Duration: approximately 6 hours.
Another unforgettable day, spent exploring the Grey Lake Valley.
The "Grey Lake" trail takes us through the Pehoe Valley, reaching the "Grey" Valley. This magnificent valley stretches for 60 kilometers (37 miles) from the base of the Patagonian ice cap to the terminus at Grey Lake, and its name comes from its glacial origin.
Today we will enjoy magnificent views of the glaciers descending from the "Campo de Hielo Sur," with the Grey Glacier standing out at approximately 300 km (186 miles) in length and 25 km (16 miles) in width, continuously shedding large ice blocks that slide toward Grey Lake.
Today's hike lasts about 4 hours and takes us along a trail that leads to an impressive viewpoint overlooking the entire lake, always with views of the Torres del Paine, particularly Paine Grande.
At the end of the hike, we will board the catamaran that crosses Lake Pehoe to head back to Puerto Natales by private vehicle, where we will overnight at a hotel.
After breakfast at the hotel, we will check out and, at the scheduled time, be transferred to the bus station for the express bus ride to El Calafate, Argentina, approximately 160 km (99 miles) away.
The journey takes about 6 hours, depending on the time spent at customs when crossing the border between Chile and Argentina.
Upon arrival in El Calafate, we will take a taxi to the hotel.
Check-in and free time to explore or relax.
Today is dedicated to visiting one of the greatest natural wonders of the world, the Perito Moreno Glacier, located in Los Glaciares National Park.
This massive ice field slowly slides over the Patagonian land, covering an area of about 22,000 square kilometers! It is the third-largest glacier on Earth, surpassed only in size by Antarctica with 14 million square kilometers and Greenland with 1 million square kilometers.
Due to the favorable local conditions, Perito Moreno is the only glacier where it is possible to witness the calving of its front face, which stands about 74 meters high. It is also one of the most important freshwater reserves in the world.
We will visit prime observation points for the glacier’s face, which is about 400 meters away, as the paths lead us close enough for an unforgettable experience.
In the afternoon, we will take a boat trip to observe up close the impressive ice wall of the glacier and the icebergs that form from the erosion of the glacier’s face.
We will return to El Calafate in the late afternoon.
Overnight at the hotel.
After breakfast at the hotel, we will depart at the scheduled time for El Chaltén, a journey of 220 kilometers (137 miles) through breathtaking landscapes.
El Chaltén is a small and picturesque town, often considered the trekking capital of Argentina. It lies at the foot of the Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre massif.
Upon arrival, we will check in at the cabins or bungalows and have a briefing about the upcoming trekking days.
The rest of the day is free time to explore or relax.
Our first trek in Los Glaciares National Park is not very difficult.
We will drive from El Chaltén to the bridge over the Río Eléctrico (16 km/10 miles from El Chaltén), and from this point, we will begin our hike through the valley of the river. The valley is stunningly beautiful.
We will follow a trail along the river, passing through a lenga forest, a tree species typical of the Andean-Patagonian vegetation, home to many bird species such as the Magellanic woodpecker, pitío woodpecker, and austral parakeets, among others.
After about 2 hours of hiking, we will reach the Piedra del Fraile refuge, where we will spend the night.
From here, we will quickly reach the Piedra del Fraile viewpoint, with views of the Río Eléctrico valley and the northern face of Cerro Chaltén, as well as the Mermoz and Guillaumet spires.
The name "Piedra del Fraile" comes from the famous Italian missionary, photographer, and mountaineer Alberto María de Agostini, who used this site as a base camp for his explorations in the region in the 1930s.
Today's Trekking: Distance: 7 km (4.3 miles) / Duration: approximately 3 hours.
Elevation gain: 160 meters, descent: 77 meters.
Depending on the weather, today’s trek may be extended.
We will depart from Piedra del Fraile, heading toward Río Blanco, where we will follow a trail along its banks, surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes, especially dense lenga forests.
The trail continues with some ups and downs, traversing the lateral moraine of the "Piedras Blancas" glacier until we reach the location of our camp for the night.
The entire route offers breathtaking scenery that will captivate any nature lover and trekking enthusiast.
A highlight of the day will be the viewpoint of the "Piedras Blancas" glacier, where we can observe its glacial moraines and the retreat that has occurred over the past few decades.
Our main goal for the day is the climb to the "Laguna de los Tres," the best viewpoint to admire the Fitz Roy rock formation and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful spots in Patagonia.
Afterwards, we will return to camp and have free time to relax.
Today's Trekking: Distance: 10.5 km (7 miles) / Duration: approximately 6 hours.
Elevation gain: 384 meters, descent: 183 meters.
In the early hours of the day, we will have time to contemplate the enormous towers of Fitz Roy (Cerro Chaltén). When the sky is clear, the sunrise paints them in a striking orange, creating a stunning scene.
After a refreshing breakfast, we will depart from the Poincenot camp. Today's route takes us past the Madre and Hija Lagoons before descending into the Cerro Torre valley.
Cerro Torre is one of the most impressive mountains on earth, with its 800 meters of vertical granite and its characteristic ice mushroom at the summit. The story of its conquest is equally remarkable, and Ricardo will share the details with you.
Our camp will be situated near the shores of Laguna Torre, where the Fitz Roy River originates. The views are absolutely breathtaking.
Today's Trekking: Distance: 14.8 km (9.2 miles) / Duration: approximately 6 hours.
Elevation gain: 664 meters, descent: 793 meters.
We return to El Chaltén via the valley we ascended the previous day. Gradually, we lose some altitude and head back to civilization... leaving behind a unique, prehistoric world of mountains, ice, and fairy-tale forests... ahead of us are the rich Argentine roasts and a good Malbec, the best wine variety in Patagonia.
Today's Trekking: Distance: 8.5 km (5.2 miles) / Duration: approximately 4 hours.
Elevation gain: 126 meters, descent: 321 meters.
Breakfast and free morning until the transport to the airport for the return flight.

For Chile, Type C outlets are used, also known as European outlets, which are the same as the ones used in Portugal.
