Chile is a South American country occupying a long, narrow strip of coastline wedged between the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. It is bordered to the north by Peru, to the northeast by Bolivia, and to the east by Argentina and the Drake Passage, the southernmost tip of the country.
The Pacific forms the entire western border of the country, with a coastline stretching 6 435 kilometers.
With almost 20 million inhabitants, Chile comprises some overseas territories, such as the Juan Fernández Archipelago, the Desventuradas Islands, Sala y Gómez Island and Easter Island, the latter two being located in Polynesia.
Chile claims sovereignty over an area of 1,250,000 square kilometers in Antarctica, making it one of the countries with the largest territorial extension. In addition, it is recognized as one of the best places in the world for stargazing.
