The name Indonesia has its roots in two Greek words: «Indos» which means Indian and «Nesos» which means islands. It is an apt description of the archipelago as it is estimated to have a total of 17,508 islands, of which only about 6,000 are inhabited, stretching 5,150 km between the Australian and Asian continents and dividing the Pacific and Indian oceans at the Equator.
Indonesia’s moderate year-round climate, fertile soil brought by lava and minerals found on land and sea caused by volcanic eruptions have made it an ideal habitat for a large number of unique and endemic flora and fauna.
