Mount Fuji - Pagoda in summer in Japan

A Summer in Japan with Agostinho Mendes

Condições Particulares

Documentation
For this trip, you need to have a valid passport with at least 6 months of validity from the date of departure from the visited country.

Transfers
For this trip, Papa-Léguas stipulates a “group flight.” All travelers must have the same flight as the “group flight,” which can be purchased through Papa-Léguas or online.

Daily Activity and Transport
This trip is classified as accessible (green level) in terms of difficulty. However, daily walks in the city are expected, and these may exceed six hours of actual walking on mostly flat terrain.

Travel within cities between sites will be done using public transport networks, including trains, ferries, and buses (in Kyoto).

Baggage will always be carried by the participants, so luggage should be as small as possible.

Travelers who do not purchase flights through Papa-Léguas and wish to use the arrival and departure transfers must book flights to the same airport and at the same time as the group flights.

Accommodation
The individual supplement does not apply to the night spent at the temple or the night at the capsule hotel.
In the capsule hotel, capsules are assigned by gender. There are separate floors for men and women. The bathrooms are shared and have a Japanese style.
In the monastery accommodation, rooms may be double, triple, or quadruple. To avoid discomfort, the tour leader may suggest room distribution by gender. The bathrooms are shared and have a Japanese style. There is a set schedule for showers.

The size of a standard room in Japan is small, typically around 12 square meters. Beds follow the same trend and are also small.
Rooms are preferably in the “non-smoking” section of the selected accommodations, but we cannot guarantee that all rooms will be in that area.

Tour Leader
This is an adventure and cultural discovery trip. The leader is someone with experience in the country being visited, with a network of contacts and knowledge that facilitates interaction and a unique cultural experience. Their role is to lead the group throughout the journey, facilitating interaction and integration with the places visited.
The role of the tour leader should never be confused with that of a tourist guide. The tour leader is not expected to have specific knowledge of monuments, museums, or other tourist sites.
If the trip includes sites that require a guide due to their historical, geological, biological, or artistic complexity, the guide will be hired in advance, and this will be explicitly mentioned in the program.

Cancellations
If the client cancels the trip up to 91 days before the departure date and no services have been reserved and paid for, the paid deposit will be fully refunded. If services have already been reserved and paid for, the amount refunded will be reduced by the costs already paid to service providers.

If the client cancels the trip 90 days or less before the departure date, they will have to pay all costs arising from their registration and subsequent cancellation, plus an amount that may reach 15% of the trip price. The client may be reimbursed for the difference between the amount already paid and the above-mentioned amounts.

Smokers
It is prohibited to smoke on the street while walking, with designated smoking areas (although they are difficult to find).

Travelers over 75 years
The travel insurance included in this program is only valid for travelers up to 75 years old. This does not mean that older travelers cannot travel, but they will need to obtain their own travel insurance.

WhatsApp Group
About a month before departure, Papa-Léguas will create a WhatsApp group for easy and fluid interaction between travelers and the tour leader. If you do not agree with this action, please inform us.

Itinerary

Dia 1 Flight: Origin City - Tokyo

Today marks the beginning of a fascinating summer in Japan journey to the country many call the Land of the Rising Sun. The flight will include a layover, generally in a Central European country, before landing in Tokyo, the vibrant starting point of your Japan travel adventure the following day.

Note: if the traveler wishes to purchase flights independently, they must arrive at a time that is the same or close to the group flights indicated by Papa-Léguas, as the tour leader will be waiting at the airport. The transfer to the hotel will be arranged once the entire group has gathered at the airport.

Dia 2 Tokyo

After collecting the luggage and passing through customs, the tour leader will be waiting to welcome and greet all the travelers. During a summer in Japan, there will be time to pick up SIM cards or routers, as well as to exchange or withdraw money, if necessary, before leaving the airport.

After checking in at the hotel and enjoying a refreshing lunch, we will spend most of the afternoon in Akihabara, the district that became famous for its concentration of electronics stores, especially after World War II, when there was a large black market for these types of products. However, as Japan prospered, Akihabara shifted towards the business of calculators and watches, toys, games, and, from the 1990s, computers and other technologies. More recently, Akiba, as it has also come to be known, has focused on Otaku culture, including anime, manga, and cosplay items, making it a fascinating destination during a summer in Japan.

Today, since everyone will be tired from the long journey to get here, we will return early to the hotel to recharge and get ready to be in top shape the following morning.

Dia 3 Second day in Tokyo

The day begins early, as will almost every day during the trip. And right from the start, for those who wish, with a typical Japanese breakfast, which will be an interesting challenge for the Western palate.

The day's visits begin with Tokyo Station, a historic building made of red bricks, dating back to 1914 and renovated in 2012 to preserve its pre-war appearance. Next is Marunouchi, the district located between the station and the Imperial Palace. Today, one of Japan’s most prestigious commercial districts and home to some of the country's most powerful companies, especially in the financial sector, Marunouchi was once located within the outer moats of Edo Castle, which meant it housed many residences of some of Japan's most powerful feudal lords.

Continuing through the Imperial Palace Gardens, actually a huge green area that offers a refuge from the urban hustle and bustle, we will catch a glimpse of part of the complex where the emperor resides and reach one of its most iconic entrances: the gate near the Nijubashi Bridge. A short walk further, we will find the Tokyo International Forum, completed in 1996, designed by architect Rafael Viñoly, and a true ode to modern architecture.

Next is the famous Ginza district, with its luxury stores and haute couture, as well as the boldness of the architecture in many buildings, making it one of the most fashionable and bustling areas of the city. A square meter of land in the center of the district is worth over ten million yen (6,300€), making this area one of the most expensive real estate markets in Japan.

A pleasant walk from Ginza will take us to the exterior complex of the Tsukiji Market. Once the most important fish market in the world, now moved to the Toyosu district, Tsukiji remains vibrant with its colorful shops and labyrinthine alleys filled with small restaurants where we might taste some of the best sushi in the world. Needless to say, today’s lunch will be here.

Fully recharged, we will head to Azabudai Hills, a complex of well-known skyscrapers in the city, home to the tallest building in Japan. But what brings us here is not the architecture or urban modernity, but rather something that will captivate our senses for a couple of hours: the immersive show teamLab Borderless. This is a virtual world without borders and a museum without a predetermined path, resulting in unexpected moments of exploration and discovery. Originally built in Odaiba, teamLab Borderless attracted an average of 2.3 million visitors annually, setting a world record as the most visited museum in the world by a single artist.

Not far from the museum we just visited, we’ll have the opportunity to observe another city icon: the Tokyo Tower. Completed in 1958, the monument plays a symbolic role in the city's contemporary history. It remains a landmark that witnessed Tokyo’s rebirth as a modern metropolis after the damages caused by World War II.

In the late afternoon or early evening, we’ll wander through the Shinjuku district, a dynamic and multifaceted area that symbolizes modernity and Japanese pop culture. Known for its impressive skyscrapers, electronics stores, and entertainment spaces, Shinjuku offers a lively and eclectic nightlife experience. Proof of this is Omoide Yokocho, with its alleys filled with traditional restaurants; the colorful Kabukicho, which, among other things, is a sort of red-light district; and Golden Gai, a bar area where many ended their nights.

Dia 4 Third day in Tokyo

Leaving the hotel behind, we will head to Ueno Park, a true oasis in the heart of Tokyo. This vast park houses several museums, including the Tokyo National Museum, temples, and even a zoo. During our visit, in addition to the inherent beauty the park has to offer, we will have the opportunity to visit the Benten-do Temple and walk around much of the Shinobazu Pond.

Next, we will proceed to the neighboring district of Asakusa, where the imposing Senso-ji Temple awaits us. Founded in the 7th century, this temple is the oldest in Tokyo and is dedicated to Kannon, the goddess of mercy. Following that is the Sumida River, which will guide us on a pleasant walk to Ryogoku, the famous sumo district, where the main stadium for sumo wrestling in Japan is located.

After lunch, we will cross Tokyo Bay to the modern island of Odaiba. Here, in addition to experiencing the fusion of entertainment and futuristic architecture, we will have an extraordinary view of the city skyline, always with the Rainbow Bridge in the foreground. Also noteworthy is the replica of the American Statue of Liberty, which was a gift from the French government.

The day will end in Shibuya, one of the most vibrant and iconic districts of Tokyo. Here, we will witness the massive hustle and bustle of the famous Shibuya Crossing, walk through streets filled with people and lights, and, no less importantly, admire the story of Hachiko: the dog who became a symbol of loyalty in Japan.

Dia 5 Tokyo - Kawaguchiko

Early in the morning, we will head to the busiest transportation complex in the world: Shinjuku Station. For a few minutes, we will be among the approximately three million people who pass through here daily. From here, we will take a bus (or train, if there's a direct route) to Kawaguchiko, one of the five lakes surrounding the iconic Mount Fuji. The journey, which will be quite scenic in its final part, will take about two to two and a half hours.

Upon arrival at this charming destination, and after leaving our luggage at the hotel, we will walk along the shores of the lake in search of the best views of Mount Fuji. We will also visit the Itchiku Kubota Art Museum, where we can appreciate the mastery with which this "wizard" of color painted the most beautiful landscapes of Japan on stunning kimonos.

In the late afternoon, we will return to the train station that welcomed us in the morning, but this time for a brief ten-minute train ride. Afterward, we will enjoy a pleasant 15-minute walk uphill that will take us to the Chureito Pagoda, a five-story building built in 1963 and part of the Arakura Sengen Shrine. A prime location to view the city of Fujiyoshida, what truly brings us here is the breathtaking view of Mount Fuji, especially during sunset. These will be magical, truly unforgettable moments that will result in beautiful photographs to cherish later.

We will then return to the hotel area, where we will look for a place nearby to have dinner.

Alojamento: HotelRefeições: Breakfast

Dia 6 Kawaguchiko

After a bus trip early in the morning, we will arrive at Aokigahara, a stunning forest that has grown over the lava fields surrounding Mount Fuji and is particularly beautiful during the summer in Japan. The scenery will invite us not only to explore its beauty but also to respect the delicate harmony between the natural world and the somewhat eerie myths that linger within it. Due to the absence of restaurants inside the forest, today's lunch will need to be prepared in advance and carried by each traveler.

After spending a few hours in communion with nature and the silence echoing through the forest, we will continue on to Lake Saiko, a much smaller body of water than Kawaguchiko, but with a truly breathtaking view of Mount Fuji.

Before returning to the hotel in Kawaguchiko, we will also have the opportunity to visit Iyashino-Sato Nenba, the museum village filled with traditional houses with thatched "Kabuto-zukuri" roofs, or roofs that resemble the helmets of samurai warriors. While the buildings seem to have withstood the centuries and now testify to the tranquility of rural Japanese life, the truth is that the village was completely devastated by a typhoon in 1966. It was later rebuilt and transformed into a museum village where no one resides today, but where it is possible to visit typical houses and interpretive centers about the history and tradition of the area.

Dia 7 Kawaguchiko - Takayama

Today’s morning will be long, as we have an approximately 4-hour bus ride ahead of us. We are heading to the Japanese Alps, one of the areas with some of the most beautiful landscapes on the island of Honshu. By early afternoon, we will arrive in Takayama, a city that will serve as our base for exploring the region.

After lunch, we will explore the city’s streets, which transport us back to the feudal era when the city became known for its high-quality timber and highly skilled carpenters. Among the many attractions on offer, we will highlight small museums, temples, stately homes, and street markets filled with local crafts and products. We will start with Takayama Jinya, a beautiful traditional Japanese building that once served as the office of the Tokugawa shogunate’s government during the Edo Period. We will then continue to Sanmachi Suji, the street that is the heart of the city’s historic center and features an impressive collection of well-preserved houses.

Next, we will visit the Kusakabe House, one of the oldest commercial spaces in Takayama still open to the public. It is said that the former inhabitants, the Kusakabe family, were particularly successful moneylenders. To conclude the day’s visits, we will continue our walk to the Hachiman Shrine. Surrounded by lush cedar forests and a special atmosphere, the shrine invites reflection and connection with Japan's history and spirituality.

In addition to its religious significance, the Hachiman Shrine is also the site of important annual festivals and traditional ceremonies that celebrate local culture and devotion to the gods.

Dia 8 Takayama - Shirakawa-go - Hirayu Onsen - Takayama

After breakfast, we will head to one of the most well-known spots in this region: the village of Ogimachi in Shirakawa-go, with its houses built in the gassho-zukuri style, which directly translates to "built with hands in prayer." Based on a relatively simple structure, the gassho-zukuri style is used in the construction of two- or three-story houses, with steep, two-sided roofs made from thick layers of thatch. Part of a larger group of villages declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, Ogimachi is the largest village and perhaps the one with the most points of interest.

About an hour and a half from Ogimachi, we will spend the afternoon in Hirayu Onsen, a hot spring resort in the Japanese Alps, located in a stunning mountainous landscape in Chubu Sangaku National Park. The region is filled with mineral-rich hot springs that invite relaxation in outdoor baths, offering spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. This is the perfect time to unwind and experience the traditional Japanese baths.

Before returning to Takayama, we will also have the opportunity to take a relatively easy walk to visit a beautiful waterfall that cascades down 64 meters, located about 30 minutes from the center of Hirayu.

Dia 9 Takayama - Kamikochi - Takayama

Continuing our exploration of the Japanese Alps, today we will visit one of the most extraordinary places in the region: Kamikochi and the 15 kilometers of the Azusa River valley. Located 1500 meters above sea level, the region shines during the summer in Japan and offers some of the most spectacular mountain views, largely due to the presence of the peaks Okuhotakadake (3190 m), Maehotakadake (3090 m), and Yakedake (2455 m), an active volcano. But the beauty doesn't stop there. There are also lakes, waterfalls, vast forests, and some primate communities that will accompany us during a very enjoyable day. In the evening, we will return to the city of Takayama to stay at the hotel.

Note: As there are few places to eat along the hiking routes, if preferred, lunch for the day can be prepared in advance and carried by each traveler for a picnic.

Dia 10 Takayama - Kyoto

Today, our destination is Kyoto, the city that will host us for the next few days. Since it is somewhat distant, we will spend the entire morning traveling.

After checking into the hotel and enjoying a rewarding lunch at a nearby restaurant, we will take a bus from the urban network toward the Golden Pavilion, or as it is known here, Kinkakuji. Adapted from an existing complex to serve as a vacation home for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in the late 14th century, with his premature death, and according to his will, the space was eventually converted into a Zen Buddhist temple.

The impressive Golden Pavilion was built to enshrine Buddha, with an additional sanctuary on the second level dedicated to Kannon, the goddess of mercy. The space is filled with a lake named Kyōko-chi, gardens that are a true tribute to the garden design of the Muromachi period, considered the classical period of Japanese garden design, and the building that gives the location its name, with the top two floors covered in real gold leaf.

From the Golden Pavilion, we will stroll to a "hidden gem" in the city: the Imamya Shrine and its garden. This Shinto complex, dating back to 994, enshrines several kami, including deities for long life, good health, and marriage. The walk will take no more than 20 minutes, but with luck, we will be rewarded with one or two couples choosing the shrine's gardens for their wedding photos.

Dia 11 Kyoto

From the hotel, we will walk to Kyoto's central station. It will be an approximately 30-minute walk, allowing us to observe some of the contrasts the city has to offer: on one side, modernity, with tall buildings and wide avenues; on the other, narrow streets with only one lane for vehicles, traditional low-rise houses, many still made of wood.

Upon arriving at the station, we will take the train to one of Kyoto's most photographed locations: the Fushimi Inari Taisha complex, a Shinto shrine famous for the thousands of red torii gates (between 20,000 and 40,000, according to various sources) that create tunnels along several paths leading to the summit of Mount Inari, also sacred, which took the name of the deity Inari, the fox made into a divinity of rice and harvests. The journey to the top, especially when accompanied by the summer temperatures in Japan, can be more challenging for some, but it will surely be worth it.

After returning to Kyoto’s central station, we will explore the building that, with its 15+ floors, is one of the most iconic landmarks in the city regarding 20th-century architecture. Walking along the Skyway passageway, taking in the city view from one of the several observation points, or enjoying a delicious ramen in one of the many restaurants on the 9th floor are just a few of the things we will do.

In the afternoon, we will start by visiting Higashiyama, surely one of the most special neighborhoods in Kyoto. Filled with alleys full of preserved historical buildings, Higashiyama is a special place to “experience” old traditional Kyoto, especially between the Kiyomizudera Temple and Yasaka Shrine. That is exactly what we will do!

At the end of the day, we will explore Gion, a district known for its many famous restaurants and traditional teahouses, places that are the natural habitat of Geishas and Maikos. So, without an absolute guarantee of success, we will wander through the alleys of the neighborhood, hoping to catch sight of one of these characters who have become true icons of Japanese culture. The night will continue in the district, including a chance to dine here as well.

Dia 12 Kyoto - Osaka

Similar to the previous morning, today we will start the day at one of the most photographed locations in the city: the Arashiyama area and its famous bamboo grove. Known as Sagano Chikurin no Michi, this expressive forest presents pathways where bamboo grows densely on both sides, and the wind, shaking the foliage in a hypnotic dance, creates a contagious atmosphere.

Next, we’ll visit the Okochi Sanso Villa, the former home of Japanese film actor Denjiro Okochi (1898-1962). The architecture here reflects much of traditional Japanese design, but the main reason for our visit is the 2 hectares of gardens that were constructed. It is a remarkable example of traditional Japanese gardens, incorporating the surrounding forest landscape into the artificial garden, a specific style called shakkei, meaning "borrowed scenery."

We will then descend through the forest along more or less enclosed trails until we reach the Hozu River. Along its banks, the brief journey to the Togetsukyo Bridge will be rich with scenic surroundings. Togetsukyo, meaning "moon-crossing bridge," is one of Arashiyama’s most iconic landmarks and was originally built during the Heian period (794-1185).

After returning to the city center, lunch and most of the afternoon will be free for shopping and picking up travel souvenirs.

Around 5 p.m., we will leave Kyoto and begin exploring a new city: the iconic Osaka. And there’s no better way to start than with a stay at a capsule hotel, a type of accommodation originally designed for those who missed the last trains of the night, but today it has become a hallmark of the country.

In the evening, we will have the opportunity to explore Dōtombori, certainly the most vibrant nightlife area in the city. This district stretches along the 400-year-old canal that gave it its name, now flanked by pedestrian streets filled with neon signs and illuminated billboards reflected in the waters. Here, we won’t miss the famous "running man" billboard from Glico, as well as one of Japan's delicacies: Takoyaki.

Dia 13 Osaka - Mt. Koya

Today's journey promises to take us to Mount Koya, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site and certainly one of the most iconic and emblematic places in Japan, but we’ll get to that soon.

We’ll leave the hotel early to make the most of the morning in Osaka, but the first stop of the day will be Namba, the station where we’ll leave our luggage and from where we will later depart for our main destination.

Leaving the station behind, we will walk to Shitennōji, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Japan (some even consider it the first of all). Founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku, who supported the introduction of Buddhism to Japan, the complex has been destroyed by fire several times over the centuries but was always rebuilt to reflect the original 6th-century design.

We’ll continue to Shinsekai, a district that was largely developed in the years before the Great War but was greatly neglected in the following decades. With the Tsūtenkaku Tower serving as the “beacon” in the center of the district, we’ll wander through the streets filled with restaurants serving Kushikatsu, Osaka’s specialty of various skewered foods, breaded and fried. Next, we will visit Tennoji Park, a place full of lush gardens and scenic lakes, providing a relaxing retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. Before lunch, we’ll also have the opportunity to visit part of Abeno Harukas, which was the tallest building in Japan until mid-2023.

The distance between Osaka and Mount Koya is not very great, but it’s not quick to get there either. We will embark on an odyssey with constant changes between trains, cogwheel elevators, and buses, until we reach the monastery where we will stay for the night. This effort will be well rewarded in the end!

Mount Koya, also known as Koyasan, is a sacred site of great significance in the context of Buddhism, specifically the Shingon tradition, which was introduced to Japan by Kobo Daishi in 805. Also known as Kukai, this respected monk and scholar established the Okunoin temple, which became the spiritual epicenter of the region. While originally the small village of temples that grew around the temple founded by Kobo Daishi only received pilgrims, today the temples open their doors to all visitors who wish to spend the night in this sacred place.

Staying in a temple offers a unique experience of authentic immersion and sharing the local way of life. From the meals to the baths, sleeping on traditional futons, or participating in morning prayers with the monks, every detail provides a glimpse into Japan that many of us imagine is a thing of the past.

Dia 14 Mt. Koya - Osaka

Early in the morning, before the first rays of sunlight appear, the gong struck by a monk will call us to the morning prayer. During this ritual, the monks chant melodious hymns and perform spiritual practices, creating an atmosphere of profound serenity that will inspire us.

Just like the dinner the previous day, today’s breakfast will be entirely vegetarian, a sublime culinary experience, highlighted by fresh ingredients and traditional cooking techniques. Ultimately, each meal reflects the spiritual commitment and the pursuit of harmony with nature.

The day's visits begin with the discovery of Okunoin, the sacred site where we can find the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi and one of Japan's largest, if not the largest, cemeteries. Extending over two kilometers, more than two hundred thousand graves are scattered throughout a dense forest filled with centuries-old Japanese cedars, creating a mystical atmosphere that leaves no one indifferent. Before lunch, there will also be time to visit Kongobuji, the headquarters of Shingon Buddhism, with over 10,000 temples spread across Japan, and the Danjo Garan temple complex.

After a comforting lunch, we’ll begin our journey back to Osaka in the afternoon. And if the arrival at Mount Koya involved hopping between trains, buses, and cogwheel elevators, the departure will involve the same, but this time in the opposite direction.

We will be staying in the Umeda district, where we’ll take a first evening walk to explore the area.

Dia 15 Osaka - Himeji - Osaka

Not far from Osaka, much of the day will be spent in Himeji, a city known for housing Japan's most famous and splendid castle. Considered a national treasure and a UNESCO World Heritage site, Himeji Castle is one of the 12 original castles of Japan. It is worth noting that it has survived over 400 years without significant damage from wars, earthquakes, or fires. Also known as the "Castle of the Heron" because of its characteristic white plastered walls, it is a remarkable complex that beautifully showcases traditional Japanese castle architecture.

Next, we will visit the Koko-en Gardens, located right next to the castle complex. This construction consists of nine walled gardens, each designed in different styles from the Edo Period, occupying the site of the former western residence of the feudal lord Nishi-Oyashiki. Although the construction is recent (1992), it is a true representation of what a traditional Japanese garden symbolizes.

Returning to Osaka, we will explore the Kita district, which means "north," and is the area surrounding the large Umeda Station. While the railway complex is the heart of this district, it is surrounded by large shopping centers, headquarters of major companies, the iconic Hep Five with its red Ferris wheel, and a little further away, the Umeda Sky Building: a structure with two towers, standing 173 meters tall, connected by a "floating" observation platform on the 39th floor.
