Condições Particulares

This trip requires great mental versatility, a spirit of adventure, and optimism.

The nights that are not spent in a bus or boat will be spent in hotels or hostels. In everyday life it is called “Hostel” because there are accommodations that have exactly the typical typology we are used to for a hotel.

The boat in Pucallpa may be several hours late, and may take one or two days. The sailing lasts four days and so it is pointed out that there are “buffer” days that ensure these delays.
If the boat leaves on the scheduled date the buffer days will be spent in Iquitos.

In everyday life it is called “Hostel” because there are accommodations that have exactly the typical typology we are used to for a hotel.

Transfers
Travelers who do not purchase flights from Papa-Léguas may not be assured of arrival and departure transfers if their flights are not exactly the same as the flights booked for the group. If the traveler chooses to book the transfers Papa-Léguas for the flights they have bought on their own, there is an additional fee, which varies according to the destination country and the program.

Dia 2 Arrival in Lima - Huaraz

Arrival in Lima in the morning. The tour leader will be at the airport waiting for the group.

Transport to the hotel and check-in organized for those arriving early in the morning. Today we spend a free afternoon in Lima before boarding a comfortable bus for an overnight trip of around 9 hours to the city of Huaraz, nestled between the White and Black mountain ranges in the Peruvian Andes.

Alojamento: HotelRefeições: Breakfast

Dia 3 Huaráz and Wilcacoha Lagoon

We arrive early in the morning in the city of Huaraz, which is about 3100 meters above sea level.

In this region of the Andes there are two important mountain ranges, the Blanca and the Negra and in the middle of which is the city of Huaraz, the starting point for exploring this region. The Cordillera Blanca, as the name implies, has some of the highest points in the Andes and is characterized by its snowy white peaks. The Cordillera Negra , on the other hand, being more subject to the ocean winds, is devoid of snow and vegetation.

It still contains several places of interest, one of which is the Wilcacocha lagoon which, in Quechua, means lagoon of the grandchild. We will visit this lagoon because from the plateau where it is located we will have an unforgettable view of the Cordillera Branca. Along the climb and descent we come across local people going about their daily lives and we can glimpse some of their adobe houses. We also have the opportunity to observe the enormous biodiversity of these Andean landscapes.

So, the morning will be spent resting at the accommodation until lunchtime when, with our stomachs full, we'll set off for our first adventure in the Andes in the afternoon.

The round-trip hike is easy, with a steady climb to the top and then down to the starting point, and will take about 5 hours in total. An acclimatization hike to 3700 meters high to prepare for the coming days and to get in touch with the Andes, because from the top the views will be unforgettable.

We return to the hotel.

Dia 4 Chavin de Huantar

Today we woke up and headed to the city of Chavin de Huantar, located at an altitude of about 3,200 meters. During the trip, we stopped in some villages and noteworthy places to admire the incredible landscapes along the way.

Chavin is a village situated amidst the mountain ranges, much smaller than Huaraz. This village thrives on tourism attracted by the ruins of the pre-Inca temple complex, which are considered UNESCO heritage of Chavin de Huantar. This temple complex was built between 1200 and 500 BC and was once regarded as the birthplace of the first organized cultural and religious center in South America. Nowadays, archaeologists have made other discoveries in different sites that have taken away this distinction from Chavin. However, it is one of the few that still retains a glimpse of the aura and glory of the pre-Inca civilization, the Chavin civilization.

Therefore, we are going to visit the village with its main square, or center, similar to many others scattered throughout Spanish-colonized South America, where the cholitas, with their colorful costumes and ponchos, indicate their village or region of origin. They walk around busy or sell chicha morada in improvised stalls.

From here, we will proceed to the temple complex, where we will explore its enigmatic faces, galleries, and the famous stele known as the Lanzon, which contains a totem or divine image of a creature that is half-human and half-animal, standing approximately 4.5 meters tall.

After a fun day exploring the temples and learning about the pre-Inca culture and its impact, we will return to Huaraz to have dinner and rest peacefully.

Dia 5 The Pastoruri Glacier

Another day dawns, and we rise with it.

Today, we have a journey ahead to one of the places that used to be one of the most iconic in the mountain range, and still is today, but for different reasons. We are heading to the Pastoruri Glacier.

After two days of acclimatization in Huaraz and its surroundings, at an altitude of over 3000 meters, we are ready to embark on this adventure. We will depart in a private vehicle that will take us along the road to the glacier, passing through some villages along the way and enjoying stunning landscapes, such as the valley where we can walk among various Puya Raimondi plants.

If the condor is the bird of the Andes, the Puya Raimondi is the queen plant of the Andes. This plant is the largest in the bromeliad family, the same family as the pineapple, and it is characterized by having an inflorescence that can reach up to 8 meters in height, making the plant reach an astonishing 12 meters in height. We then continue the journey to the start of the cobblestone path that will lead us to the Pastoruri Glacier.

The hike takes about 45 to 60 minutes and is of an easy level. The return is made along the same path. Unfortunately, due to climate change, it is estimated that the glacier will disappear within about 20 years, as it is receding at an average rate of 10 meters per year, and there has been no new ice formation to "feed" it in recent years. It is sad to witness one of the last glaciers of the Andes and see firsthand the impacts of climate change affecting the world.

We will return to Huaraz in the late afternoon for dinner and rest for the last night before we head towards the entrance of the Peruvian Amazon, Pucallpa.

Dia 6 Trip to Pucallpa

Today is dedicated to the road as we cross the Andes towards the city of Pucallpa.

As Tiziano Terzani once said, when he had to go a year without flying, he rediscovered the pleasure of geography and traveling. Suddenly, a mountain became a challenge that needed to be overcome or even climbed to reach the other side. This requires time, planning, and patience.

Armed with all of this, we first take a local bus that will take us to the city of La Unión in about 5 hours. From there, a shared car will take us to Huanuco, in approximately three and a half hours, where we catch the overnight bus to Pucallpa, an 8 hour journey.

It is a long day where we descend from the mountain peaks and gradually witness the transition from white to brown, which in turn gives way to green and red, colors that we will wake up to the following morning.

Dia 7 Pucallpa

After a long journey, we finally arrive in May Yushin, which means "red land" in Shipibo and corresponds to none other than the city of Pucallpa, the gateway to the Peruvian Amazon.

Named as such by the Shipibo indigenous tribe of this area because the land is red along the banks of the Ucayali River. It is in Pucallpa where we embark on a cargo boat that will take us downriver to Iquitos, in the heart of the Peruvian jungle.

These boats are known to depart only when they are full, so our departure may occur on this day of arrival or one to two days later. In that case, the guide will suggest activities such as visiting an indigenous Shipibo community from Pucallpa. There, we can meet a family of shamans and their village, learning more about the lives of these healing women and men. Additionally, we will have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the river and forest life.

Therefore, this day will be dedicated to exploring the markets of Pucallpa and preparing everything for the departure, including buying hammocks for the more adventurous ones who want to mingle with the locals and other travelers on board, as well as water to drink and some provisions for the four-day journey.

Dia 8 Pucallpa and its surroundings

Today we spend the day in Pucallpa making all the preparations for the great adventure that lies ahead upriver and, if possible, we will visit an indigenous Shipibo community in the vicinity of Pucallpa.

We can also visit the indigenous communities museum in Pucallpa or go to the Yarinacocha Lake for a swim and feel the humidity and warmth of the Peruvian Amazon forest.

We remind you that this day and the following days can be used as buffer days as the boat is usually delayed in departing to Iquitos.

Dia 9 Descending the Ucayali River from Pucallpa to Iquitos

During these days, we meandered with our boat along the Peruvian Amazon jungle. These boats are the point of contact between the populations living along the riverbanks, who receive their supplies from the outside when the boat passes by.

Throughout these days, we will have time to get to know life along the river and in the Amazon better. We will have the opportunity to listen to the fascinating sounds coming from the riverbanks as we glide through the muddy waters, where pink dolphins and other animals sometimes come to say hello. For the luckiest ones, it might be possible to spot the giant anaconda, an animal revered by the indigenous people.

Undoubtedly, it will be an unforgettable journey where hours will be spent with our fellow travelers and also with the locals going about their tasks between villages or bringing and carrying much-awaited cargo and goods.

Dia 14 Iquitos

We arrived in Iquitos and the heart of the Peruvian Amazon after days of sailing through the endless green of the Peruvian Amazon forest and the villages that emerge along the way.

We are in a city that can only be reached by boat or plane. It flourished in the 19th century with rubber exploration and trade. It is no wonder, therefore, that European-style buildings mix with others that have a more indigenous character.

This is where we will rest for the last few days if the boat arrives on time, or it will be our last day before returning to Lima and Portugal.

Depending on the available time, the trip leader may suggest activities to better understand life in this remote area, which serves as a gateway to the Amazon and the Brazilian Amazon, as the Ucayali River flows directly into the Amazon River.

Today we wake up for the last time to the sounds of the forest and the warmth and humidity that characterize it.

FAQs

Is this trip for me?

This trip is for anyone who wants to do something different from what is commonly offered in Peru. Explore the regions of the Andes through easy, yet beautiful hikes that will stay in your memory forever. It is a trip drawn for those who like to travel with time and in the most authentic way possible in that we will be subject to the rhythm that the roads, whether mountain or river, allow. It will not be a trip for those who like to have everything organized and on time. As you can imagine, these less traveled or more adventurous places in Peru are served by fewer services that are more at the service of the people than the tourists. All this makes the trip more enticing for those who like to contact local people and feel the raw nature of the places. So, if you have an adventurous spirit and are in even the slightest bit of physical shape, this is the trip for you. Come and get to know the Peruvian Amazon and its inhabitants, feel the pulse of life in this most isolated region, and also be dazzled by the magic and landscapes of the Andes, be it through the people who live in the mountains or the views you will never forget.

Who will guide this trip?

The tour leader will be Nuno Cruz and at some points we will have local guides as well.

What kind of accommodation do I stay in during this trip?

We will stay in a variety of accommodations, ranging from local hotels and houses, with private or shared bathrooms and with two beds or dormitories of 3 to 8 beds. We sleep two nights in a bus for longer trips and to optimize travel time. And we will be 4 to 5 nights on a boat where we can sleep in hammocks or cabins if available at the time of departure. We remind you that the boats that go down the Ucayali River between Pucallpa and Iquitos do not have fixed schedules, nor do they have reserved seats, so we cannot guarantee a cabin for those who want one. There is usually the possibility to buy hammocks in Pucallpa before the boat departs.

What kind of transportation do we use on this trip?

On this trip we use buses, shared cars, boats and airplane. The buses have a bathroom and reclining seats ranging from 90°, 120°, and 160°. For overnight trips we always try seats with a 160° recline. The boat that will take us from Pucallpa to Iquitos is a cargo boat and as such will be loaded with all kinds of goods (from chickens to trucks) and has a people-only deck. This deck, which has separate bathrooms for men and women, is where meals are provided at set times and makes stops along the way to load and unload people and objects, so there is a chance to disembark momentarily and get in touch with life and how it goes along the Peruvian Amazon.

Are arrival and departure transfers included?

On this trip there is a group flight, that is, there is a specific time for arrival and the transfers will be according to the arrival of that flight. Those who choose to buy different flights will have to be at the airport at the same time to take advantage of the transfers, otherwise they will go to the place indicated by the tour leader.

Does Papa-Léguas handle the flights?

Papa-Léguas sends you a flight proposal. After you receive the flight simulation, you can choose to buy from Papa-Léguas or another agency, or online.

Where do I meet the group?

You will meet the group and the tour leader at the airport upon arrival in Lima.

Can I drink tap water in Peru?

No, tap water is not recommended for drinking anywhere on our route, including Peru's capital, Lima. You can, however, take a filter that eliminates 99% of the bacteria and that you can use to purify the water instead of buying plastic bottles.

How much money should I bring for my personal expenses?

We recommend taking between 150 and 200 euros for expenses such as extra activities and food.

Is insurance included in the land program?

It is not included for those departing from outside of Portugal, whether they are Portuguese citizens or not. Contact Papa-Léguas for further clarification. The exception is for travelers not departing from national soil, whether or not they hold Portuguese nationality. Due to the charecteristics of the trip, it is best to take a 60 to 70 liter backpack, as this is a trip for backpackers with a younf and adventurous spirit.

Is there internet connection or wifi throughout the trip?

There is internet and it works in the larger cities we will be riding through like Lima, Huaraz and Pucallpa, on the rest of the itinerary there may be no network as we will be between mountains and on the river in the middle of the Peruvian Amazon rainforest. The places where we will be staying have internet access and in the buses and boat this access is non-existent.
