Join Jorge Duarte Estevão , on an unforgettable journey to Namibia. You will traverse desert plains, towering dunes, and wildlife parks. From Etosha to the Ruacana Waterfalls, and through the Sossusvlei dunes, adventure will always be present.
The trip to Namibia is a journey of emotions, vibrant and tranquil moments, tranquility and excitement. It’s about discovering ourselves and the world around us, all in one of the ten least densely populated countries on the planet.
Let’s travel to Namibia through the desert until we reach the gates of Angola and awaken to the sound of the Ruacana Waterfalls. We’ll tread upon the towering dunes of Sossusvlei, explore the Skeleton Coast—where Portuguese navigators arrived centuries ago—and admire Cape Cross, the site where Diogo Cão marked the completion of his crossing.
By embarking on this journey to Namibia with Jorge Duarte Estevão, you will share an adventure of contrasts and sensations with a small group of fellow travelers—an experience you will never forget.
This itinerary brings you the best of Namibia in two weeks. Are you up for the challenge?
This day is dedicated for departure to Windhoek, and you should arrive in Namibia's capital the next day. Note: the arrival/departure dates may vary, depending on your origin city. If you have any doubts, contact Papa-Léguas for further clarification.
Note: if the traveler wants to buy the flights themselves, they must be on the same schedule (or earlier) than the group flights indicated by Papa-Léguas, since the tour leader will be at the airport waiting for the group and, preferably, they should all leave the airport together. Whenever this is not possible, you will be given all the directions so that you can arrange your own transportation to the hotel.
Today is the day of arrival in Windhoek. After the usual procedure at the airport and border control, we proceeded to check-in at the hotel.
The rest of the day will be spent relaxing and visiting Namibia's capital, a city where some marks of the colonial past still remain.
We left the capital behind and headed for Sesriem, a chasm carved by water. The walls rise abruptly on both sides of the canyon, while the birds take refuge in the cliffs. It is an almost impossible place to see in Africa.
Depending on your arrival time, we will enter the Namib-Naukluft Park - where the Sossusvlei Dunes are located.
Along the way we will see breathtaking scenery.
Today we woke up very early to see the sunrise over the dunes. There we will admire the great Namibian dunes: Dune 45, Dead Vlei and Big Papa. Every corner of this region presents a haunting beauty. It is an amazing natural spectacle.
Named Dune 45 - because it is 45 kilometers from the town of Sesriem - it is known for its elegant shape and has earned it the distinction of the most photographed dune in the world. Big Daddy is, in turn, the highest dune in the Sossusvlei area.
Of course, we didn't leave out the Dead Vlei area, probably Namibia's most recognizable image.
Solitaire is a desert town, which serves as an oasis in the Namib. There is very few in Solitaire, but this American West-style town is popular because it is on the route to/from Sossusvlei, and because it has a famous place where everyone stops to try the apple pie - considered the best in the country.
On the way we also crossed the Tropic of Capricorn and a majestic canyon.
The Walvis Bay lagoon - Namibia's oldest - is said to be in the process of disappearing completely. This is an extremely important site and this is where hundreds of birds gather, including flocks of flamingos, chunky-billed pelicans, and black cormorants.
The small headland of Cape Cross lies on the western coast of Namibia. This is a historical area where the Portuguese landed in 1486 and it was here that the navigator Diogo Cão erected a stone cross in honor of King D. João II. Cape Cross is also known for its extraordinary seal colony. With the abundance of fish, resulting from the Benguela Current, seals live there by the thousands.
We walk along part of the Skeleton Coast, and understand why it has this macabre name. Situated along Namibia's scenic coastline, the coastal town of Swakopmund is known for its boulevards, colonial architecture, and desert terrain. Established in 1892 as the region's main port, Swakopmund is described as being more German than some German cities.
The afternoon will be free and there are several (optional) activities such as a visit to the Namib-Naukluft Park to see the Welwitscha Mirabilis plant, the Valley of the Moon, paragliding or skiing in the dunes. Or just go swimming at the beach (if the weather helps). It is also a place to sample local delicacies and especially for optional activities such as Swakopmund oysters.
Those who wish can also go for a walk in the desert, where they can try to spot snakes,
spiders, chameleons, or lizards.
Damaraland was a name given to the north-central part of what later became Namibia, inhabited by the Damaras. The stupendous mountainous region of Damaraland is home to several species adapted to living in the desert, such as elephants, rhinos, zebras, and lions, which survive in this almost barren landscape.
A must-see attraction is the picturesque Brandberg, Namibia's highest mountain, which is home to thousands of ancient cave paintings.
Along the way, however, we will have a big surprise that we will only reveal to those who travel with us. And we will stay overnight in a very special place.
Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Twyfelfontein is home to one of the most relevant sets of rock carvings found in southern Africa. We will have access to magnificent views of the Huab Valley, the desert plains and distant mountains.
The rock outcrops of Twyfelfontein feature exceptional Bushmen engravings, considered some of the best-preserved engravings on the continent. Visit the Petrified Forest, which dates back millions of years and offers a haunting landscape of giant fossilized trees.
Here we will feel light years away from any civilization. And we head even further north, in search of the more undiscovered Namibia.
Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Twyfelfontein is home to one of the most relevant sets of rock carvings found in southern Africa.
We will have access to magnificent views of the Huab Valley, the desert plains and distant mountains. Here we will feel light years away from any civilization.
Located in the Kaokoland region, the Ruacana Waterfalls on the border with Angola are phenomenal. Epupa consists of a series of waterfalls, 60 meters high, fed by the Kunene River. There are dozens of natural pools that provide the Himba people and visitors with a fantastic recreational site.
These beautiful waterfalls present an incredible contrast to the rest of Namibia's desert scenery. There are also forests of baobabs and wild fig trees, and countless species of wildlife, such as the beautiful bee-eaters.
Maybe we can talk to someone, in Portuguese, on the other side of the border.
We woke up early to enter a special place. A trip to Namibia will never be complete without taking (at least) one safari in Etosha National Park. Our group will have chances to spot lions, leopards, elephants, gazelles, cheetahs, rhinos, zebras, and many other animals that inhabit this spectacular wildlife park in Africa.
At the end of the day (and in the evening), we wait in the amphitheater of our lodge for the animals to visit, or alternatively, we can opt for a night safari (optional).
Today we also give you the chance to take one last morning safari (optional).
After lunch, we will continue to drive through Etosha an open vehicle (safari included in the trip) so that we can observe the animals of Etosha without visual restrictions. Let's go out with our camera batteries charged, be very attentive, and capture every movement of the savannah.
Etosha is one of the largest parks in Africa, occupying an area of 22,000 square kilometers and where more than 3,500 kilometers of roads can be traveled. It is bigger than the Kruger in South Africa. More than 100 species of mammals live there, more than 300 species of birds live there, and there are more than 80 ponds - where we will also expect wildlife to come to quench their thirst. Here there will always be the atmosphere of tension between prey and predators.
Etosha National Park offers us visual overload in abundance, an opulence of wildlife, where we often just have to be patient until the animals appear before us. There will also be time to take a look at the extensive salt flats of Etosha.
The Waterberg Plateau Park is characterized as a prominent region, elevated above the Kalahari plains. The plateau is virtually inaccessible, but the views are incredible.
In the early 1970s, several endangered species from Namibia were transported to this region to protect them from predators and poachers. The program was very successful and Waterberg now supplies species to other parks in Namibia. At the end of the day it is possible to go on safari in the Waterberg reserve to find buffalo, rhinos, and other species (optional).
Jorge suggests climbing to the top of the Waterberg to see the sunrise on this day. After breakfast, we leave the Waterberg and pass through the Okahandja handicraft market. Carpenters and craftsmen from all over exhibit and sell their works of art here. There is a lot to choice, and even if you don't buy, it won't be hard to be surrendered to the local arts.
Then we travel to the capital city of Windhoek for the last hours on African soil.
They were intense days of strong emotions and many images that will last forever in our memory.
It's time to say goodbye to amazing Namibia and catch the flight home.
This is the day that marks the return to the Origin city. Note: the arrival/departure dates may vary, depending on your origin city. If you have any doubts, contact Papa-Léguas for further clarification. We have come to the end of an unforgettable trip.
In the luggage will come, for sure, memories of an incredible adventure and the will to explore other destinations with us.
This Namibia trip is for people who love long journeys, who are adventurous and flexible. It is an "overland" trip and as such we will spend a lot of time on the roads and tracks of Namibia. If you have a fascination with African landscapes and their wildlife, then this could very well be the trip of a lifetime.
The tour leader is Jorge Duarte Estevão, who has visited Namibia several times (and it's one of his favorite countries). He is a very competent, good-natured tour leader who knows the country and has excellent feedback from travelers on previous trips. Sometimes we also have a local guide (that the tour leader hires) to share more specific knowledge of the history, culture or even geology.
The chosen accommodations may vary between well-located hotels in the cities and very comfortable lodges in the rest of the country. The rooms will be twin/double rooms with private bathrooms.
To facilitate travel between the many places we will visit in Namibia, and also because of the (near) non-existent public transportations, we will travel in a private van. So we will have more flexibility of schedule and will be able to get to places where public transportations doesn't reach.
Transfers are included on arrival and departure from Namibia for flights recommended by Papa-Léguas. We will transfer by cab or private van to the center of Windhoek. Hosea Kutako Airport is about 31 miles from the city center. The trip takes about an hour.
Papa-Léguas sends you a flight proposal. Note: the arrival/departure dates may vary, depending on your origin city. If you have any doubts, contact Papa-Léguas for further clarification. After you receive the flight simulation, you can choose to buy from Papa-Léguas or another agency, or online.
At the airport in your origin city (if there are more travelers departing form there) or upon arrival, at the airport in Windhoek.
The presented prices of the tours are per person and consider a double room occupation. Travelers are grouped in pairs, by sex, and chronological order of registration (if they sign-up individually for the same tour). At the end of the registration period for the tour, if there is an uneven number of travelers, the traveler who stays alone and was the last to sign-up must pay the respective individual supplement - if such is demanded by the service provider. However, most of our travelers travel on their own without any change in price.
Namibia is one of the safest countries in Africa. It is necessary to take some precautions at night, especially in the larger cities. Also, we always avoid circulating at night, as there is the danger of wild animals wandering the roads. On any trip it is essential to travel with a copy (if it is digital, all the better) of your passport.
The local currency is the Namibian dollar (NAD), along with the legal tender of the South African rand, having the same market value. The South African rand is also accepted as exchange currency in Namibia. A lot of payments may be done by credit and debit cards, in nearly all restaurants, commercial establishments or other. Another important point is card cloning, so you should be careful when making payments or withdrawing money.
On average, for meals in Windhoek and Swakopmund, 20 euros a day will be enough. Most places accept USD or South African Rands as a payment method, but it is advisable to always have some money in the local Namibian currency, that is, Namibian Dollars. The money that each traveler should bring depends a lot on the type of consumption that he or she usually does while traveling, such as buying souvenirs and activities on his or her own.
Yes, it is included. The exception is for travelers not departing from national soil, whether or not they hold Portuguese nationality. The included insurance does not cover COVID-19, but you can trigger an optional insurance policy suggested by Papa-Léguas that does cover COVID-19. For more information regarding available insurance policies, see our page about travel insurance.
The necessary documentation may vary, depending on your nationality, the country of origin and the places you will travel to. For further information, consult the relevant embassy websites or contact Papa-Léguas.
In regards to clothes, it is important to go prepared for hot days and cold nights. In addition, when we leave early in the morning to observe wildlife, it is fundamental to wear warm clothes, especially a warm jacket and, eventually a winter hat and gloves. And then, also take a sun hat and mosquito repellent. Some lodges have pools, so swimwear may also be on the list. Both the tour leader and Papa-Léguas are highly environmentally aware, so we ask our groups to, whenever possible, travel with a reusable water bottle. It is also advisable to travel with extra batteries for your camera, and a powerbank.
The commonly recommended vaccines are: diphtheria, hepatitis A, tetanus, as well as hepatitis B, rabies, and typhoid. It is also recommended to take prophylaxis against malaria. The risk of malaria is present throughout the year but is higher from November to June in the northern and northeastern regions of the country, including Opuwo. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travelers aged 9 months or older arriving from countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission, and for travelers transiting for more than 12 hours through an airport in a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission. If regular medication is required, it is advisable to bring an adequate supply for the entire stay, as it may not be easy to find these medications in local pharmacies. These recommendations do not replace the consultation with a healthcare professional, especially a Travel Health Clinic. This consultation should be scheduled at least one month before the departure date. Tap water consumption is strongly discouraged, but it is possible to refill bottles with drinkable water at lodges or hotels, or purchase larger containers and refill your own bottle. Additionally, there may be long distances without available refill locations. Lastly, it is advisable to avoid wearing blue clothing as tsetse flies are attracted to the color blue.
Namibia has a subtropical desert climate characterized by large differences in daytime and nighttime temperatures, low precipitation, and low overall humidity. The seasons are the opposite of those in the Northern Hemisphere. With the exception of temperature, the climate of Namibia's parks is similar to that of Windhoek. In the dry season – May to October – that is, in winter there is little or no rain and humidity is low. Temperatures can reach 28 or 30 degrees during the day and drop to minus at night, especially in July and August. Between December and until March/April there will be rain at times and the landscape begins to be reborn. This is also a special time to visit the country. The itinerary may be conditioned by the weather. We will always do our best to visit everything that is scheduled — and even more — but the trip can be changed due to some reason that we cannot control.
You will need a power adapter of type D and M, as the sockets in Namibia are three-pin with 220V and 50Hz. Sometimes, hotels have European sockets or adapters available, but this is not guaranteed. There is mobile network coverage in most of the Namibian territory, but there are also many areas where the signal will be weak or nonexistent. It is advisable to consult your contract or contact your mobile operator to confirm the roaming prices in Namibia, which are generally quite high. Alternatively, you can purchase a SIM card from one of the local operators. Internet access is available through 3G in major cities across the country, including 4G in large urban centers.
Portuguese citizens can obtain an entry visa upon arrival at the border control. The visa is issued on the spot, free of charge. The passport must be valid for at least 6 months — counting from the date of entry into Namibia.
The space is limited in the private van we use, so we kindly request that you limit the amount of luggage. Please use only one piece of luggage with the lightest weight possible, and one personal item (small backpack, laptop bag, etc.). Additionally, there may be moments when it is necessary to drag the equipment for several meters until reaching the lodge or hotel. The official language is English, although Afrikaans and German are also spoken. Due to the proximity to Angola, a portion of the population is Portuguese-speaking. Sometimes, it is possible to find products with labels in Portuguese or Portuguese products in supermarkets.
