Dia 16 Mountain Zebra Park - Addo Elephant Park - Nelson Mandela Bay

We start the day early, with the intention of going into the Mountain Zebra Park as the gate opens. This park is different from all others we’ve seen previously, it includes the semi-desert area of Great Karoo, which holds not only mountain zebras, in danger of extinction, but also gazelles, ostriches, cheetahs, buffalos, black rhinos and a variety of birds.

We’ll spend some hours on a safari, searching for animals and admiring the spectacular views of the region, before we return to the lodge for a well-deserved breakfast.

After checking-out, we leave Cradock towards the famous Addo Elephant Park, where elephants, buffalos and other animals can be seen up-close in a unique environment, as the Renosterveld vegetation.

At the end of the afternoon, we’ll take a short ride to the lodge, which is directly in front of the Nelson Mandela Bay. The location of the lodge will allow us to walk along the beach and visit one of the many restaurants to enjoy dinner, at the traveller’s expense.

Dia 17 Garden Route - Tsitsikamma National Park - Knysma

In the morning we’ll have time for a walk on the beach or a swim in the Indian Ocean.

After breakfast, we’ll continue our journey to the heart of the amazing Garden Route region. We’ll cross the entire extension of this magnificent natural kingdom, between the ocean and the high mountains, exploring the ecologically diverse vegetation that can be found here, along with several estuaries, lakes and ancient forests.

We’ll stop regularly to explore its highlights, including the Tsitsikamma National Park, where we’ll walk along the rugged coast and suspended bridge over the Storms River mouth.

In the afternoon we’ll arrive at the vibrant city of Knysna. Surrounded by indigenous forests, fynbos (endemic vegetation of South Africa) and lagoons, this small city is a gem in a natural Garden of Eden.

Dinner at the traveller’s expense, in a local restaurant.

Is this trip for me?

This trip is for people who love long trips, have an adventurous spirit and are flexible. It is an "overland" trip and as such we will spend a lot of time on the roads and tracks of South Africa and the former Swaziland, now Eswatini. So, if you like long journeys overland in one of the most beautiful countries in Africa, and if you don't give up some comfort, then this trip is definitely for you.

Who will guide this trip?

This trip will have two local and English-speaking guides. A driver guide and an assistant guide.

What kind of accommodation do I stay in during this trip?

Accommodations are in lodges and hotels with private bathrooms on most days.

What kind of transportation do we use on this trip?

We will use a truck equipped with all the equipment that gives us enough autonomy to face the African roads safely. On some routes, we’ll use smaller four-wheel drive vehicles, for tours inside some national parks.

Are arrival and departure transfers included?

Yes. They are included if they are made within the program dates. If you decide to go earlier or extend your trip, consult us.

Does Papa-Léguas handle the flights?

If you request a flight proposal, Papa-Léguas sends you one. After you receive it, you can choose to buy from Papa-Léguas, another agency or online.

Where do I meet the group?

You will meet the group in Johannesburg, at the accommodation. After your registration you will receive more detailed information about the meeting times.

If I sign up alone, do I have to pay an individual supplement?

Not necessarily. If you do not wish to stay alone in the accommodations, you can share them with another person who is signed up. Papa-Léguas may group travelers who sign up individually for the same trip in pairs, by sex and chronological order of registration, and if the number of participants is odd, the traveler who stays alone must pay the respective individual supplement.

Can I drink tap water in South Africa?

No. We would advise you not to. Take your own filter or fill your canteen at places that the guides tell you are safe. You can always buy bottled water.

How much money should I bring for my personal expenses?

For basic expenses, such as meals not included in the program, we tell you that about 450 euros will be enough. However, this amount does not consider souvenirs or other supplemental and optional expenses.

Is insurance included in the land program?

No, it is not. The exception is for travelers not departing from national soil, whether or not they hold Portuguese nationality. Contact Papa-Léguas for further clarification. For more information regarding available insurance policies, see our page about travel insurance.

What documentation do I need to go on this trip?

The necessary documentation may vary, depending on your nationality, the country of origin and the places you will travel to. If you are already traveling through Africa and are joining this trip, you may be asked for a yellow fever vaccination certificate. For further information, consult the relevant embassy websites or contact Papa-Léguas.

What equipment is essential for this trip?

Comfortable clothing is the quickest answer. Apart from the obvious, you should take hiking shoes, a bathing suit, towel, head flashlight, etc. all packed in a backpack or duffel bag. Rigid suitcases are not suitable. When you sign up you will receive a detailed list of the equipment needed.

What are the health restrictions for entering the country?

Health restrictions may vary, depending on various factors, such as your country of origin. We recommend scheduling a Travel Medicine consultation before your trip. For further information, consult the websites of relevant agencies or contact Papa-Léguas.

Why is this a 'CLASSIC' trip?

These are the trips that balance the comfort our travelers are accustomed to with memorable experiences in every corner of the planet. Whether it's a cultural discovery trip accompanied by a Papa-Léguas travel leader or a trekking adventure with local guides, for example, CLASSIC trips provide the best of both worlds - a spirit of exploration and adventure, along with a comfortable bed at the end of the day.
